At the age of fifteen, Maerna Wayfar was sold into slavery, thanks to the efforts of a corrupt judge and three scheming partners. Mouse was born less than a year later and proved to be the light that kept Maerna from total darkness. Life was tolerable, until it wasn't. To the north, raiders' attack! Asira and four others are taken. A dream leads Danica south to Corvus and a sharp painful vision leads her to Mouse, his dying mother, and a frantic escape from the city by sea.
